Everything looks better from the air!

---------------------

My drone is the DJI Phantom II. You can read about it on their web site.

When people see it they often want to know that:

  • it links to seven satellites to be able to hover motionlessly
  • the battery lasts about 15 minutes
  • if it runs out of battery while flying, it will land softly
  • if the power fails, it will "return to base"
  • it will fly 1000 feet high
  • it can travel 15 meters in on second
  • it can be controlled up to 1000 meters

BUT, I don't fly it very high, fast, or let it go out of sight. I try to stick close to it. Safety first.

FAQ

Are you a licensed drone pilot?

These are still early days for drones. The FAA is writing regulations, but as of now, late 2014, it's still the wild west as far as drones go. Anyone can fly a drone almost anywhere. The FAA is expected to make regulations in 2015. I bought my drone in June of 2014.

Your pictures are excellent. How do you do it?

Most drones use built-in cameras, mine uses what is called the world's most versatile camera, the GoPro Hero 4 + which produces 8 megabyte stills. The drones with built-in camera capture half that resolution.

Your drone movies are wonderful. Why not charge people to make drone movies?

I don't make "drone movies" for people simply because my class of drone cannot be controlled well enough to efficiently make movies. The drones that Hollywood uses are another animal altogether. Anyone who hires me is welcome to keep the movie that the stills come from, but don't count on anything dramatic. Basically, my drone goes up, looks around, and comes down.

All of my picture are stills from drone movies. You can think of my drone as having a camera that takes a picture 24 times a second. The pictures are so good because they come from 4K movies, which is four times the resolution of regular DVD movies. Only a few movie cameras can film in 4K.

I have more questions.
