Pictures form Dhamma Giri in 1979

These pictures were taken by an Igatpuri (the name of the village near Dhamma Giri) commercial photographer. I probably bought them from his shop as I walked from the train station to Dhamma Giri.

Meditators like me slept in the grass huts. Each hut slept two people with a thin divider separating them. The huts were dusty, but they offered shade in the day and at night the inside was the same as the outside temperature. The toilet block and showers were located a short walk away.

To me staying there felt like I was in the USA's Grand Canyon--the distant barren hills, expecially at the beginning and end of the day were spectacular.

In those days there were very few trees--the large tree on the right was in front of the dining hall.

When the meditation hall was dedicated, U Chit Tin, Mother Sayama, and Mr and Mrs Goenka sat in front of the main entrance.

Mother Sayama. She was lively--a dedicated and inspiring meditator.
