The streams that flowed down from the hills were crystal clear. When I camped in the jungle, I drank from the streams. A stream that flowed through the camp was very popular with the refugees as a place to swim, wash clothes, and otherwise relax.

I spent about 50 nights camping alone in the jungle. The jungle was always a wonderful relief from the bustle of the camp. Only once did I see one of the famous two-step snakes that the area is noted for. They are called two-step because if they bite you, you can walk two steps before you die. Fortunately I was lying down, sleeping, when I woke up and the snake was beside me. After a few minutes of heart-to-heart eye contact with me, the snake wandered off.

I only met the Negrito people once in the forest and I never saw any of the guerillas who were rumored to be there. The Negrito hunters walked with incredible swiftness and grace through the forest.
