I came to the camp with indredible curiosity about the refugee experience. A few days after I arrived I met the woman pictured here. Talkative, friendly, and with fluent English, I knew immediately that Sokhanno would be what anthropologists call "the perfect informant." Indeed she was. Because the camp administrators were so unorganized, I had esentially nothing to do for the first six months I was there. For three of those months Sokhanno and I worked on her biography.

In 1982 the portable typewriter pictured here was high-tech and the envy of many of the teachers. My roommate complained about the noise it made. I wouldn't have traded it for anything.
