A Cambodian English class. Their teacher stands in the middle of the back row.

Once I invited a tourist to the camp and showed him around. He saw the smiling and apparently care-free refugees and couldn't believe that they had suffered as much as the media had reported. As he said that he and I were walking up a small lane and one of my Cambodian students was just ahead of us. I stopped the student and asked him if he had lost anyone in his family. In the tone of voice that most people would have used to tell you the time of day he said, "Sixteen people in my family were killed."
