These Vietnamese refugees were one of my classes. My translators are standing beside me. When I lived in the camp, there were about equal numbers of Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees.

In all of my years in the camps, I only met a few refugees who had the policital savvy to understand how American foreign policy had helped destroy thier country. All of those refugees were Vietnamese.

Most of these people blamed their troubles on the "communists." In the early '80s no one could imagine that Nike Shoes would eventually be made in Vietnam and that communism would come to embrace capitalism.

A few of these men had been soldiers; many of the women were widows.
