At the end of class, in this case a one-month cultural orientation class, there always was a party. Here I pose with gifts from students. Usually refugees stayed in the Philippines Refugee Processing Center about six months. They were given about two months of English classes and then a month of 20 four-hour-a-day classes designed to orient them to life in the West. This left them with a lot of free time. Some people studied, gardened,or made things; others drank and otherwise wasted their time. One man told me that every day he walked the five kilometers from one end of the camp to the other. |
