The devil's advocate, Imelda Marcos once came to the processing center. She came with her husband, the President-for-lfie of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos. While he was in the camp Ferdinand tried to give a speech. As he spoke he would occasionally forgot what he was talking about-- loyal wife that she was, Imelda stood beside him and whispered into his ear what to say. Two of the great thieves of the twentieth century, Ferdinand and Imelda pocketed billions of dollars of American aid. The American policy of bankrolling corrupt and dirty friends would eventually backfire in the Philippines.

In the 21st century similarly muddle-headed American foreign policy continues to bankroll various thugs around the world.

One of the Philippine men in my dormitory told me that Ferdinand was the smartest man in the Philippines.
