The Chinese are building paved roads in Western Tibet to help them get their goods into Nepal and the Indian subcontinent. However most roads still look something like this. In many places it is not clear where the road ends and the vast high desert begins. To the credit of the Chinese, in a few places we saw signs urging drivers not to take shortcuts that could possibly threaten the ecosystem and the herds that the nomads tend.
